유미루(b.1990)는 기억과 역사가 특정 장소, 매체, 구술, 이미지 안에서 어떻게 축적되고 전이되며 다시 감각될 수 있는지를 탐구하는 리서치 기반 미디어 작가다.

그의 작업은 공식적인 역사 서술이나 선형적 기록이 충분히 포착하지 못하는 층위에서 출발한다. 해안 지형의 지질학적 흔적, 도시 하부 공간에 남은 노동과 생활의 기억, 위기종 식물의 생태, 역사적 사건의 주변부에 놓인 이들의 구술은 그의 작업에서 중요한 리서치의 대상이 된다. 이러한 요소들은 쉽게 드러나지 않지만, 장소와 몸, 물질과 기억의 관계 속에서 계속 작동하고 있다.

수집된 자료는 영상, 사진, 사운드, 게임 엔진, VR, 인터랙티브 미디어 등을 통해 재구성된다. 이때 작업의 목적은 기억을 하나의 완결된 이야기로 재현하는 것이 아니다. 유미루는 파편화된 이미지, 목소리, 텍스트, 공간적 단서들을 비선형적으로 배열함으로써 기억이 어떻게 발생하고, 이동하고, 다시 조립되는지를 형식 자체로 다룬다.

그의 작업에서 관람자는 완성된 의미를 전달받는 수용자가 아니라, 기억이 작동하는 조건에 개입하는 행위자가 된다. 관람자는 걷고, 찾고, 선택하고, 조합하는 과정 속에서 기록된 기억과 감각적 흔적 사이의 간극을 마주한다. 유미루의 작업은 기억을 설명하는 것이 아니라, 기억이 다시 감지되고 구성될 수 있는 조건을 설계한다.


Miru Yoo (b.1990) is a research-based media artist exploring how memory and history are accumulated, transferred, and made sensible again through specific places, media, oral testimonies, and images.

His work begins in layers that official historical narratives or linear records often fail to fully capture. Geological traces of coastal terrain, memories of labor and everyday life beneath urban spaces, the ecology of endangered plant species, and oral testimonies from those positioned at the margins of historical events become important subjects of his research. These elements may not be immediately visible, yet they continue to operate within the relations between place, body, materiality, and memory.

The collected materials are reorganized through video, photography, sound, game engines, VR, and interactive media. Rather than reconstructing memory as a fixed narrative, Yoo arranges fragmented images, voices, texts, and spatial cues in non-linear structures. Through this process, his work examines how memory emerges, moves, and is recomposed.

In Yoo’s work, the viewer is not a passive recipient of meaning, but an active participant who intervenes in the conditions through which memory operates. Through acts of walking, searching, selecting, and assembling, the viewer encounters the gap between recorded memory and sensory traces. Yoo’s practice does not explain memory; it designs the conditions through which memory may be sensed and composed again.
