2024년 4월 16일 세월호 참사 당시의 속보와 이후 단독보도에 매몰되어 전원 구조 등 오보를 쏟아낸 뉴스 영상들을 모아 편집한 작업이다. 시간 순서와 사고의 수습, 구조 과정이 뒤섞여 있던 당시의 상황의 영상을 편집해 전원 구조로 결말을 내었다. 현실과 영상 매체, 그리고 언론 보도에 대해 시간을 매개하여 비판적으로 접근해보려 하였다.
2014년 4월 16일 세월호 참사는 국가와 언론의 기능에 대해 많은 불신이 피어나게 된 계기가 되었다. 미숙한 대처로 억울 하게 세상을 떠난 295명을 잊지 않고 기억하기 위한 작업이다. 현장에 있지 않았던 사람들은 참사를 텔레비전을 통해 실시 간으로, 그리고 일방적으로 받아들일 수 밖에 없었고 무엇이 현실인지 인식하지 못하는 상황에 이르렀다.
대학생에 불과한 내가 참사를 기억하고 세상을 떠난 사람들을 위해 할 수 있는 일은 ‘구조됨 -> 구조되지 않음’을 반복하며 온갖 오보들을 발신하고 참사의 시간 흐름을 뒤섞어 놓은 언론의 보도 영상들을 재구성하여 최종적으로 그들이 나의 작업 안에서 구조되어 다시 돌아오기를 바라는 것 뿐이었다.
This work is a video montage composed of breaking news reports and exclusive coverage from April 16, 2014—the day of the Sewol Ferry Disaster. The selected footage includes numerous false reports, most notably the early claims that “all passengers had been rescued.” I edited the clips to reflect the chaotic confusion of that day, where the timeline of the accident, rescue efforts, and media narratives became entangled. The video ultimately concludes with the false announcement of total rescue, serving as a critical reflection on media, temporality, and the distortion of reality through broadcasting.
The Sewol Ferry Disaster exposed deep cracks in the functions of both the state and the media. Due to the government's inadequate response, 295 lives were lost—many of them students. This work is an attempt to remember them and to confront the dissonance between lived reality and media representation. For those of us not present at the scene, the disaster was experienced in real time through television—passively, and often without the ability to discern what was real.
As a mere university student at the time, I questioned what I could do to remember the victims and engage with the memory of that tragedy. I chose to reconstruct the news footage that had repeated false claims of rescue, shuffled the timeline of events, and created a narrative rupture. By deliberately reassembling the chaos, I hoped that—within my work—they might symbolically be rescued and return.
